Hello Region 2
Greeting from the great white north, I hope that everyone is staying warm as difficult as that may be. I must say that it has been an interesting first month as interim director, a big thank - you goes to Mary and the board of directors for giving me the opportunity to serve and make a difference in our region. That brings me to my first bit of news, there will be two regional meetings this year! The first will be April 24,2010 at Western Pennsylvania Hospital, the second will be hosted by home facility, Akron Children's Hospital on July 24,2010. It would be my recommendation that everyone attend one if not both of these meetings, Not only are they educational they present an opportunity to share ideas and insights about the way we conduct our business throughout the region. Also do not forget that these earn credits toward re-certification, I plan to be in attendance at both and look forward to speaking with as many of you as possible. Once again any question or comments are always welcomed and encouraged. Thank you.

Greetings region 3
It is hard to believe spring is here, but I for one am ready for warm weather and sunshine.

Don’t forget the meeting in Nashville Tennessee April 24th at Vanderbilt. Nashville is a great place to visit and have a little fun after a day full of education.

Remember how to get the registration form for the meeting in Nashville? Click at the bottom of this report where it says click. It will give you the registration form with all the information about the meeting and what to do.

It is also time to start thinking about your recommendations for the educational award for region 3. I know each of us has someone who has played a pivotal role in our education and becoming anesthesia techs and technologist. We need to recognize these people as they have helped in the growth of our society and profession..

Election of officers is just around the corner in July. Take the time to consider who you would like to have as the leaders of this society. Who will do the very best for the society as a whole? We are growing and progressing and we want to continue this process with strong leadership and dedication to the ASATT vision.

Don’t forget we celebrate Anesthesia Tech day March 31st. That’s a great day for us.

Hello Region 4 members!
Arrangements for our Region 4 Annual Educational Conference are nearly complete. In case some of you did not hear about the change, Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee had originally agreed to host our spring conference but has since backed out. There will NOT be an ASATT Educational Conference at Froedtert in Milwaukee this year. But some great people at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, Wisconsin stepped up and offered to host this event and it is shaping up very nicely.

We have some excellent presentations with some very knowledgeable people in the field of Anesthesia. It will be up to a 7 CE, one day conference. I can’t wait to hear some of these topics. We have everything from dramatic procedures done in the makeshift hospitals in Iraq with an incredibly graphic slide presentation showing the difficulties of airway manipulation, monitoring, venous access, volume resuscitation, and prioritization of mass traumas, to heart wrenching details of organ donation and Anesthesia’s role in aiding one life to save another. There also will be presentations on “Pediatrics-They are not just a small adult” detailing the huge differences in anesthesia in adults versus infants and children, and what Malignant Hyperthermia is and how it affects anesthesia for patients. We also have Dr. James Maguire, an excellent speaker, who got everyone’s attention at the National ASATT Conference this past October speaking on role of the upper airway, and contamination/filtration of anesthesia machines and drug resistant organisms, pathogens, and their risks. There will be a presentation on new trends in non-invasive monitoring with explanations, uses, and benefits to the patient. And to top it all off, one that always makes me cringe-“Circulatory Arrest-Life on the Edge”. Why it’s done, what brought the patient to this point, and Anesthesia’s role.

As usual, there will be Vendors eager to show what’s new in their respective areas. We had a great turnout last year, and if the calls I have received from Vendors already indicates how the conference will go, I would have to say this will be the best yet! And word must have spread, as some have contacted me that heard about our conference last year.

And did I mention LaCrosse? This has to be one of my favorite cities. It is located right on the mighty Mississippi River surrounded by miles of beautiful bluffs! It is so scenic. And the city always has something going on with so many things to see and do. You will love it. So, as you can tell, this will be one you won’t want to miss. Brochure will be hyperlinked to the report soon. Please check back! We have blocks of rooms in 2 area hotels listed on the registration form. Both conveniently located close to Gundersen Lutheran. Or feel free to check online for many other options available.

I hope to see some returning members I have made friends with, as well as many new faces. And if anyone has any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact me at zellfam2@tds.net.

Howzit Region 7!!!
Don’t forget Region 7 has two ASATT sponsored meetings every year. If you are a member of the society, you do not have to track the CE’s from these meetings. Please try to attend a meeting closest to your home. I would like to establish attendance records at our regional meetings and offer up to 7 CE’s at each meeting.

The first meeting is right around the corner, Saturday, April 17th at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon. This meeting is being coordinated by Shannon Sayers-Rana and she has put together another great meeting.

The last time the meeting was at OHSU, our attendance was great.

This is the scheduled agenda & speakers for the meeting; Electrical, Fire, and Laser Safety by David Orlando BMET & Greg Nightingale BMET, Anesthesia Drugs by Shohreh Daraee, RPh, CVP Placement – CUSP by TBA, Cell Saving by John Rivera, Hemodynamic Monitoring by Clayton Horan, M.D., Patient Management in High Risk Surgical Patients-Simulation by John Frazier, RN, and Ultrasound-Technical Tips for Regional Anesthesia by Mark Gilbert, M.D. Speakers and topics subject to change. The meeting brochure is already posted on the website.

The second meeting will take place on Sunday, August 8th at Hilton Prince Kuhio Hotel in beautiful Honolulu, Hawaii (one block from world famous Waikiki Beach). As soon as the Oregon meeting is done I will have more details on this meeting. For those who live in Hawaii please talk to your favorite physicians and or speakers, to see if they would like to share their knowledge? Don’t put it off, talk to these speakers, check on their availability now. We have slots for them to fill. Also, please talk to your vendors about attending/sponsoring our meetings. As you all know, without their support we would not be able to have these meetings at reasonable rates. The economic picture has not changed much, so everyone is still facing some sort of financial impact. Talk to the sponsors now before they commit their funds to other worthy organizations of efforts.

The Anesthesia Technician program at North Seattle Community College has started accepting applications for the Spring Quarter. Contact Aaron Nelson if you have any questions @ AFNelson@sccd.ctc.edu or the program application can be accessed at the following link: http://facweb.northseattle.edu/afnelson/application/atec_app.htm

Would you like to visit a beautiful city that has gone through many changes since The Annual Educational Conference and Business Meeting was last there in 1997. The downtown San Diego area has gone through many changes in the last 13 years. Although we will be staying on the outskirts of the city at the Marriot Mission Valley, we will be getting 1 complimentary public transportation pass. Take a look on the internet, the hotel looks like a great place to stay with good reviews. Start making plans to come & join your peers, make new friends, network, and learn. The annual meeting will not be held close to our region until San Francisco 2013. Start looking at airfares, they will still be fairly low and will rise as the time goes on. Traditionally, you have been able to get up to 13 CE’s at this meeting. Attend one regional meeting & the annual meeting and you will fulfill all of your requirements to recertify as an Anesthesia Technician in one year. The bonus, you don’t even have to track these ASATT sponsored meetings.

Start planning for recertification. It is never too early to start.
